Series Review - The Man in the High Castle TMITHC
A steamy pile of shit. There are no other words. It is so sad to see a concept with so much potential turned into such a shit show. When it comes to historical novels you are already treading on thin ice. You don't want to make up history but you want to bring a poetic prose to the story of the past. If you want to know how it's done go ahead and read Burr by Gore Vidal.
There was so much potential in Marco Polo as well. He was not the first European to travel east but he documented his experiences thoroughly. Just imagine all those centuries ago what it was like to travel into the Mongolian empire. Of course once Hollywood got their hands on it they turned it into a soap opera. But in the end we liked it, it was a good effort and had redeeming qualities.
With TMITHC the potential for an educated exploration of what might have been had the axis powers won WWII is an exciting concept. The history of the German and Japanese people is that of success. They are like ants in how orderly and prosperous their societies are without the pollution of outside intervention. Their trains run on time. Germany is an economic powerhouse after having to start over again from rubble twice in one century. Nagasaki and Hiroshima are first world cities built from rubble.
In contrast, Detroit was destroyed from within. It used to be the richest city on the planet and now they raze neighborhoods and revert them to farmland. The epic incompetence and degeneracy that has turned the victorious US into what is now a bankrupt banana republic is left unexamined.
The story is not followable, there is some obsession with old 8mm films that are contraband in the conquered territories. Some of them show things that didn't happen, or happened in the future, or we just don't know what is happening at all.
Add to this astral plains. Yes, travelers coming back to life. Ghosts. They appear, they disappear. We really weren't expecting woo woo when we heard about the storyline. What the hell has this got to do with history? It is beyond bad. In the pantheon of bad movies we recall with affection The Master of the Flying Guillotine, which was so bad it was good!
TMITHC is just bad, all bad. We want those 30 hours of our life back. We're stunned they're gonna do a 4th season. We watched it in the way you watch a train wreck, and only to report our findings to help you in your viewing choices. The main character, this Juliana, she shleps around like a C level wanna be Audrey Hepburn, it's sad. At some point it as as if she were living in all three zones of the US at the same time, parallel worlds I think they called it. If I had to complement it we loved the scenes with beautiful German and Japanese women. We couldn't take our eyes off Bella Heathcoate. She stole the show. But if there is any way besides TMITHC to enjoy this nymph we implore you to try those, watch her in anything else but TMITHC.
We don't give this 0 farts for three reasons. It is a way to pass time and ponder if you've ever seen anything worse. There is obviously a following for this disaster, we concede perhaps maybe they know something we don't. Maybe. And thirdly, Did we say three reasons? 2 out of 5 Farts is being kind. Avoid.
Sweety, choose better scripts.
