Many of us have dreams we hope to achieve but often too easily we succumb to negative criticisms meant to demoralize us and give up our visions or ideas as impossible. Today the world we live in has been made a much better place through different appliances created to serve almost all our needs.These inventions were once ideas in the minds of the purported "mentally depraved men and women with incurable urge for seemingly impossible aspirations".To the mind of many skeptics and critics impossible was the slogan,falling in this category were the leading scientists of the time,leading organisations,as well as the view of the common man.for an idea when hatched seems impossible until fruition,and very normal for an average mind to express pessimism.
Sometimes, we consult people with ideas and receive discouraging remarks and see our ideas being tagged as lofty but we should not despair as history is filled with plethora of instances where comments were made or predictions about how impossible it seems and in most cases supported with explanations. In 1926, lee deforest said " while theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially I consider it an impossibility,a development of which we need waste little time dreaming" . a foremost British mathematician lord kevin once said"radio has no future".an editorial in a boston post in 1865 said "well informed people know it is impossible to transmit voices over wires and that were it possible to do so the thing would have no practical value" sir john Eric Ericson surgeon to queen Victoria an enviable position at the moment,in a vituperative manner concluded that," the abdomen, the chest, and the brain will be forever shut from the intrusion of the wise and human surgeon". The business week in august 1968 carried a post which appeared thus"with over 50 foreign cars already on sale here the Japanese auto industry isn't likely to carve out a big slice of the U.S market". In 1859 Edwin l. Drake tried to enlist people to drill oil, this was a reply he got from one of the workers "drill for oil? You mean drill into the ground to try and find oil? You're crazy". A foremost French professor of strategy Marechal Ferdinand Foch confidently concluded that " Airplanes are interesting toys but of no military value" .in like manner Charles H.Dwell, commissioner, u.s office of patents in 1899 said "Everything that can be invented has been invented". We don't need to be adept students of history to understand that these predictions or forecasts were wrong.
Let's imagine these great men and women bade goodbye to their dreams amidst mounting unsavoury remarks we won't have our phones, televisions, radios etc. Why then should we be deterred by every negative comment we receive when we consult people with our ideas? Your dream could be graduating with a first class or becoming a renowned administrator but just like the inventors and great minds whose lasting legacies have been forever etched in history be ready to receive comments like " ITS NOT POSSIBLE", "NO ONE HAS EVER REACHED THERE".its now left to you to rise up and like the prodigal son go back to that idea or dream you have dumped a long time ago and sing "ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE" as you ascend into acme.
Remember that making a lasting impact on a rock requires extra work and to leave a lasting impact on the sands of time you need to stand firmly amidst the whirlwinds of discouragement that blows continuously around you.your idea might just be next big thing the world is waiting for, why wait? When you have a world to conquer.
