The Act of Thanksgiving

Compliment of the season to you all. In this festive season the most important thing that is required of us is to give thanks to God for life, goodness and faithfulness towards us from January to December.

Thanksgiving is a response to the grace of God upon one's life. Thanksgiving is an expression of thanks, it is an act of giving thanks, grateful acknowledgment of benefits of favors especially to God. It also means a public acknowledgment of divine favor or kindness.

Reasons to be grateful

° It is an honor unto God:

When we give thanks we acknowledge that He is God. It means that we recognize that He His all in all and we depend totally on His sovereignty meaning that we realize that everything we are or that we are going through He His aware of it all and He has taken absolute control. It confirms that He His the source of our strength, life, hope, wisdom, grace, activity, purpose and our entire being.

°The danger if not giving thanks:

Not giving thanks to God is as dangerous as committing a deadly sin. It is a way of dishonoring God and can lead to a man’s down fall, bitterness, complaints, a joyless life etc. Thanklessness makes us to focus on the problems rather than on God.

°It is a command:

Enter into His gates with Thanks and into His court with praise. We should give thanks in all situation because if we refuse He will raise stones in place of humans. In the books of Colossians ch3vs15,17 He gave us the command twice to always give thanks. Thanksgiving is a pervasive and essential concept in the scripture.

Benefits of Giving Thanks

• It replaces sin
Paul commands believers to replace sin with thanksgiving Ephesians ch5vs4. The key to locking God’s heart is sin and the key to unlock it is Thanksgiving. It overcomes bitterness, disrespect towards God. We should believe that we are deeply indebted to God for all we have and hope to acquire.

• It brings victory:
Thanksgiving makes you to win battles even without fighting. Remember the story of the Israelite when they went to war and He told them to only sing praises of Him. Thanksgiving does things that prayers can’t.

• For Redemption:
For God so love the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have external life.

• Increases positive emotions such as love, empathy and happiness.

• Reduces negative emotions such as envy, hatred and anger.

• Thanksgiving and praise puts challenges in perspective.

• Thanksgiving focuses your mind on the right subject.

• It strengthens one's faith in God.

When counting your blessings remember to give thanks for what God has done and for who He is.
Training your heart to be thankful does many good this.
