How to include aspirational content
So, following on from my previous post, how would a platform encourage an open spiral rather than a closed one. How would it encourage broader thinking and experience?
Let's pick the example of literature. everyone is aware of it, and there is some exposure in any childhood education. I don't think it controversial to say that the more widely someone is read, the broader their general appreciation of society is.
So, with a novel, you and read it and also potentially write it.
If you are reading literature, then a platform that encourages the discovery of new genres, or the even just sampling the generally agreed masters of the field. There are a million lists of top works and authors, all very open to criticism about exact rankings and memberships (should some authors be included simply because they sold huge numbers), or should they be excluded for the nature of their views. Would it be better to have read all the works of a single author, or to sample a subset of a wide variety? We can't read everything.
On the subject of limited time and resources, the "I would like to write a novel someday" wish could be put into context. When is it 'too late' to try to achieve this? In theory never, but if you look at the data, very few great authors began in later life.
The graph below is an analysis of a fairly arbitrary list of top 50 authors, looking at their first breakthrough publication. it's plotted by a 'potential' 90-year lifespan, and also by the actual lifetime. It's shown as a state change from not being an author, to becoming a published author.
You can imagine a similar graph for many different endeavours, which could encourage or motivate to either begin work on a dream or pick a more realistic goal.
