في الحقيقة قد يبدو هذا السؤال غبيا جدا، لأنه أمر طبيعي ومألوف ومنطقي في جميع أنحاء العالم. لكن ما نقصده هنا هو سبب اتجاه عقارب الساعة من اليسار الى اليمين في نصف الساعة الأعلى وبالعكس في نصف الساعة السفلي. فنحن نعرف جيدا أنه لا يوجد شيء آلي موجود بالطبيعة، وهذا يعني أن شخصا ما حدد طبيعة دوران عقارب الساعة التي ذكرناها سابقا. لكن لماذا يستمر هذا الوضع حتى الآن على الرغم من التطور المستمر في عالم الساعات؟ من المعقول جدا أن نفترض ما يلي، إن أول ساعات رقمية ظهرت في النصف الشمالي فكان من الطبيعي أن تشير يد الساعة (المؤشر) الى جهة زوال ظل الشمس نفسها. بينما الشمس تشرق في نصف الكرة الجنوبي من ناحية الشرق ، وكما يحدث في شمال الكرة الأرضية أيضا، فإن ظل الشمس يتحرك بالإتجاه المعاكس، او عكس اتجاه دوران الساعة السابق.
وتتدخل حوادث التاريخ بعمق في طبيعة منجزاتنا الآلية وذلك مثلا في قراءة أي معلومات ذات كمية رقمية محددة، مثل عدادات زيادة الكمية التي تسير مؤشراتها باتجاه عقارب الساعة. وربما تساعدنا المؤشرات الرقمية التي لا يوجد فيها عقارب على التخلص من سيطرة النصف الشمالي للكرة الأرضية في لا وعينا.
