Former Brazilian international Ronaldo, now retired, has been hospitalized for pneumonia on the Spanish island of Ibiza and is recovering well, a local newspaper reported on Sunday.

The 41-year-old former striker, considered one of the best players of all time, was admitted Friday afternoon in intensive care to Can Misses Hospital, where the diagnosis of pneumonia was made, according to the daily Diario de Ibiza.

A few hours later, Ronaldo asked to be transferred to a private hospital, the clinic Notre Dame du Rosaire, adds the newspaper.

The former player from Barcelona and Real Madrid is still in intensive care but his condition "evolves favorably", according to unidentified sources.

Ronaldo, a double gold ball who was named Fifa player of the year three times before retiring in 2011, travels regularly to Ibiza where he owns a house.

"Il Fenomeno", double world champion, was selected for the first time with the Seleçao at the age of 17 years. He scored 62 goals in 97 appearances including two goals in Brazil's victory over Germany in the 2002 World Cup final
