Get as big as you can while staying lean. Good advice for writing and fitness
Interesting approach.
For me writing was always about erasing, deleting my own text. How can I use less words. That is indeed the toughest part in writing. Erasing what you wrote. Usually editors do that. Writers are too deeply in love with their texts.
I have heard that too but I would rather edit my own shit so I can get it how I want it. I paid for an editor once and they “improved” it but completely changed my style. Hated it. I think that if you have your own voice and want it to sound a certain way then you should trust your gut. If you’re writing a non fiction business book or the next Dan brown type of novel then yeah, maybe get an editor.
As far as length, again I think that if it’s good, it should be as long as possible. I know people who won’t buy a book under 300 pages because if it’s good they won’t want it to end. People would always tell me on here that my shit was too long, that I should break them up into smaller articles but I don’t write for them. I have no problem sitting and reading something for fifteen minutes and honestly it confuses me to think that some people actually don’t have the patience to read anymore.
That’s fine and there is plenty out there for them to read. I’ve written comments on posts that are longer than most people’s posts. And beyond that, I’ve noticed that the longer my articles get, the more motivated I am to make them better. Very satisfying to write this one for example because I believe that it’s fucking amazing. And if it’s fucking amazing, I’d rather it be 7k words than 700
Indeed writers would rarely agree with what their editor does to their geniously crafted texts and the dilemma is huge, because more often than not a good editor would, surprisingly, improve the text. If this is not the case, one should seek a better editor.
The only instances an editor worked on my texts before publishing them, I too felt most of the editing done was degrading the text, ethically, artistically and professionally. But I had no say as these were paid-for writing assignment.
Your shit is not too long. It is what it is and it's working. I was engaged and entertained reading your shit. I started skipping paragraphs and scrolling down only when it felt the shit is becoming repetitive, slightly hollow or just well, too long. However your voice is rare here and I'm truly impressed by the ease you expose your inner workings online, eternally, as well as by the shit’s fluency.
It seems to me the greatest value to you from writing and publishing your shit, is therapeutic. Writing is a therapeutic tool and reading your stuff, one can vicariously feel the writer's relief.
Yep, very therapeutic. Sometimes when I am feeling stuck mentally I’ll sit down and just write until I get unstuck.
In this case, I’ve been watching a lot of Gary Vaynerchuck and he talks a lot about authenticity and sharing your journey. I used to do this back in the day, before I ever even heard of steemit and it’s ultimately what led to making Aliyah and joining the army.
Just have to be careful not to overuse the “talking to myself bit” as tempting as it is...
