Once you’ve identified a potential dream through reflection, it’s time to put it to the test. Let’s explore six trial runs you can do to decide if an interest is worth further pursuit:
- Volunteer
- Job Shadow
- Classes
- Clubs
- Interning
- Start a Project
Trial runs are low-cost, low commitment, and efficient. They quickly teach you what you love, what you hate, and what you’re just so-so about through actual experiences.
EXERCISE:
Pick an interest for your trial runs. Make a list of the top five interests you want to explore further. Begin with #1 as you start your trial runs. Or use the interest you chose for the Six Career Lenses exercise in Part 3 of this article series.
A quick disclaimer:
Certain factors can negatively skew your evaluation of a trial run. The bumper-to-bumper commute made you loathe your volunteer gig. The president at a club meeting droned on and on, infatuated with the sound of his own voice. The law lost its luster after you shadowed an attorney working out of her cluttered and cramped home office. One trial run is not indicative of an entire field or profession. Don’t write off an industry because of a scatterbrained boss, wonky work environment, or an unbearable trek to your trial run.
