6 Insane stats on Amazons Founder
Bezos owns 16.7% of Amazon shares, the vast majority of his $91 billion net worth. Amazon has a market cap of close to $511 billion, making Bezos’ stake worth about $85 billion. The remainder of his wealth comes from his space exploration company Blue Origin, his ownership of The Washington Post, and $2.5 billion in cash, according to Bloomberg.
Bezos made $1.5 billion today alone. At Amazon’s current valuation, for every 1% gain in the stock Bezos makes close to a billion dollars. Amazon shares were up 1.5% on Thursday morning, propelling him ahead of Gates.
Bezos could buy any of the bottom 440 S&P 500 companies. His net worth is about the same as the market value of Goldman Sachs or the GDP of Ukraine. Using that money, Bezos could also decide to scoop up all of the bottom 17 S&P 500 companies which includes names like Staples, Ralph Lauren, and H&R Block.
Compared to the average American, Bezos earned 970,000 times more this year. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median weekly earnings of full-time workers were $859 in the second quarter of 2017. Bezos averaged $833 million a week this year.
With a ratio like that, everything looks cheap. Proportionate to an average worker’s earnings, a $250,000 Ferrari 488 would cost Bezos the equivalent of just 26 cents this year. A $65 million Gulfstream G6 private jet comes out to $67. At $300 million, the most expensive painting ever sold, Willem de Kooning’s Interchange, would run Bezos a relative $309.
