The Day Money Died

in #money6 years ago (edited)

Imagine for a moment that there was no money. What would happen?

Money’s defined as a unit of exchange. What if there was no unit of exchange? What if there was no fiat, representative, asset, or crypto units of exchange? What would happen if the concept of a unit of exchange disappeared entirely?

What if money died?

I ask because it’s going to die. Money is on its way out. We’re developing systems that are leading us to different ways of structuring human interaction, and they won’t be based on exchange. They’ll be based on coordination and cooperation (you could call it a “coor” system). Any technology developed now that can survive the transition from fiat to crypto to coor is a technology of long-term potential because the crypto phase is between fiat and coor. It’s a critical phase, but there are more revolutionary systems in the works.

So, what would happen if all forms of money disappeared today? Everything everyone’s doing right now can be done without money. Oh, some bankers and accountants and cashiers would have to take the day off, but the world is perfectly functional without money.

What happens when you take away the idea of money is that individuals have to think about their motivation for engaging in an activity. If you take away money, you get a complete restructuring of human systems. And it’s on its way. The technologies that will support such a change are well in the works across all disciplines.

Enjoy your time with money while you have it. Money’s time here is limited. There will come a day, not too long from now, when money is going to say goodbye forever because money is going to die.
