The smart contracts of Steem have longer time horizons than the attention span of most people. The payouts from votes take 24 hour to settle (I am watching one of mine that popped out past 280 and is now settling near to payout around 260) and it takes a week to power up and power down.
It is a deliberate design feature that is intended to smooth out volatility and promote long term commitment to the platform.
