10 Moms Are Told They Can’t Breastfeed Babies With Down Syndrome So They Respond With Photos

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common chromosomal condition. You’re about to meet 10 amazing women who are mothers to children with Down syndrome — mothers who have spent days, weeks and months wondering if they would be able to nurse their babies or if their babies would be strong enough to develop their milk supply.

You see, mothers of babies who have Down syndrome are often told by their doctors that they won’t be able to breastfeed. These mothers often persevere through NICU stays and health issues like cardiac complications, breathing difficulties and congenital defects, just to feel heartache over time not spent nursing.

“She’s never going to learn how to latch,” one mom worried. “We’re never gonna get there.”
