Good pillows help maintain correct postural alignment which prevents back and neck pain, provide support for your neck and head, and open up your airway to help reduce snoring.

BACK SLEEPERS
If you sleep on your back, you want a pillow that is firm enough to support your neck but soft enough to cradle your head and form to it perfectly (Talalay latex is the best option for back sleepers). You may even want to find a pillow that is slightly raised on the front edge to support your neck and open up your airway to reduce snoring.
SIDE SLEEPERS
If you are a side sleeper, you want to find a high pillow so that you can keep as much pressure off of your shoulder as possible. If you want to go all in, you can even buy a pillow with a specific indent for your shoulder.

FOR STOMACH SLEEPERS
If you are one of those unique individuals that sleeps on their stomach (I still can’t understand how this is comfortable) then you want as thin of a pillow as possible to prevent neck pain.

According to Brittany Brown,
former Social Marketing:
While sleeping with or without a pillow is a personal preference, there are certain benefits of sleeping with a pillow:
- Sleeping on your side without a pillow increases your risk of osteoarthritis in the neck. If you sleep on your side, your cervical spine bends to the bed. This pinches the openings of the spine (the foramina) and causes bones to push and rub against each other. That friction and pressure causes bone to erode and grow which can create the bone spurs you can often see on cervical x-rays of patients. A pillow raises the head and straightens the spine.
- Sleeping on your back without a pillow changes your neck angle from its normal daily position. When standing, your neck also has a certain curve to it. If you sleep on your back, that curve is also distorted.
In general, studies suggest that sleeping with a pillow improves sleep quality and fits more physiologically and mechanically with the natural curve of the cervical spine. Even the Egyptians over 3,000 years ago used pillows. Here is King Tutankhamen's headrest around which his pillow linens were wrapped.

Personally, I always prefer to sleep on a pillow. Because good sleep is very important to me. And to take care of my health during sleep, I use only orthopedic sleep products. After reading this article https://fierytrippers.com/hotel-stays-and-sleep-quality-orthopedic-pillow/ , I even prefer to take an orthopedic pillow with me to the hotel. And it really helps me. Because I used to often face the problem of poor sleep while staying in a hotel.
