My Steem Engine (Miner) Experience

in #mining8 years ago (edited)

Not A How To

This is NOT a how to install a miner or mine tutorial.

Sunday

I set aside part of Sunday to see if I could set up a Steem Miner on Digital Ocean since I already have an account there.

I created 4 GB Memory / 30 GB Disk / TOR1 - Ubuntu 16.04.1 x64 "droplet" and followed all the instructions provided by @joseph.

The only time there was an issue is when I went to "make" the miner. I was running out of memory because initially I had started out with a 512MB Memory / 30 GB Disk / TOR1 - Ubuntu 16.04.1 x64 "droplet". The nice part was being able to allocate more memory and CPU power using the resize option of the droplet without having to restart from the beginning.

Mining

I am happy to report that my miner is mining and I am waiting to see if it mines it's first block. So far nothing after about 24 hours.

Mining "Pool"

There are 2 CPU's and 4 GB of memory dedicated to this mining endeavor at the moment. A droplet can be configured to run on a maximum 20 CPU's and 64GB Memory for $640 / month.

I am not prepared to invest that amount of money in testing out if this would lead to a better chance at reaping steem power rewards. However, someone could solicit steem or steem dollars to fund a "pool" to run such an experiment.

Other Benefits

Mining is another way to participate in the steem experience and learn something new.

It also allows me to start using other tools dependent on having a miner for exploration.

Conclusion

I like being the owner of my own little steem engine and I will be using my blogging efforts to keep it running and contributing to the steem network.

If you like to tinker then set aside a day to get yourself a steem engine. It's satisfying.

For publicity effects it would be awesome to fund a steem engine, thats powered by alternative energy; like a steam turbine maybe, or solar/hydrogen powered.

Yes, alternative energy would be great.

Vote with your steem dollars.

I upvoted your post, commented; will you read mine ?

whats your reported hashrate?

Not sure how to tell but I've included a screenshot from terminal window.

If there is another way then please post it here so we all benefit. Thanks.

it looks like around 6khps.. which is about half what im running.. i got mad lucky and got one after about 3 hours, but havent seen one since (been close to 24 more.)

That's exciting. Congratulations! I'm thinking of creating a snapshot of my engine and then revving it up to double or more the processing power.

Doubled up. We'll see what happens.

I should probably read the comments first, haha.

@royaltiffany claims to have mined a POW. The screenshot shows about 19K hashrate. See here https://steemit.com/steemit/@royaltiffany/steemland-an-adventure.

How is your mining going? Have you got anything in the past 2 days?

I upgraded my droplet to 8 GB ram and 4 CPU's yesterday but then the hardfork stopped my steem engine. I followed the upgrade instructions but it kept crashing with an overflow exception. I managed to install a new copy of the steem engine without destroying the droplet. It finally synchronized and started mining again about an hour ago. Thanks for being interested. Are you mining?

What kind of hash rate are you getting?

I purchased a random CPU from Server Mania for $29 a month and I am getting about 14K HPS.

Been running for a couple days now, been monitoring steemd.com to see if I pop up on the witness list.

Jude

Hashrate is hovering around 7k. Yours appears to be more cost effective with more HPS. Let me know how it goes.

@steempool

Yesterday, after 48 hours of running my steem engine (miner), I pulled the plug. I had fueled the engine with 8 GB of ram and 4 CPU's at a cost of $80 / month at DigitalOcean.com. This was generating an average of 7K hash power. I will mothball my engine and bring it out when I want to play with other new features.
