Relearning Minecraft

Now that I have a ton of obligations behind me, I've decided to try my hand at Minecraft again. It took me a minute to remember how on earth (or whatever the Minecraft world is called?) to get started, and I thought I was doing pretty well.

Then I tried to use an existing Mario-mushroom-lookin'-tree-thing as a base for a structure... by a pit of lava...
