Understanding the Nature of Social Media and its Effects on Our Life...
Greetings, dear Steemians!
Social media is the great catalyst through which the entirety of human race has finally come together under a single banner, or so we thought!
Nowadays, internet plays a huge role in our daily life, and more importantly, the dominant social media platforms are always there with us; in our moments of joy or suffering, in our loneliness or hangouts, in our brightest moments and darkest hours.
We share these intimate moments with the people who may or may not know us, and we have essentially turned social media to an undeniable and constant companion.
But there is one thing you need to understand about social media platforms. Perhaps it is the thing we can all agree on, because we might have sensed it through the years and based on our own experience.
Social media platforms are always addicting, because on the surface, their motto is to bring people together and create an environment where they can connect and communicate, but in truth, social media platforms are designed in a way to keep the user engaged, so that he/she finds it hard to leave.
That is why you find yourself pouring more and more hours to social media platforms every day.
By keeping the audience engaged and interested, they will spend more time in those platforms, and the companies behind them will have a much easier time advertising and making profits.
Imagine if you only signed in to a social media platform to send a message and then immediately left it!
Now, apart from the slippage of time, how does that adversely affect our mental health and social life?
To answer this question, we must first ask another question. How do social media platforms compel you to spend more time on them?
Social medias have certain algorithms that analyze your personality and your interests and give you content in accordance to that thought pattern.
For instance, if you are a fan of working out, then the social media will adapt itself to show you content related to working out and people who are predominantly obsessed with the same thing that you are.
The same could be said about almost anything. Even your beliefs are subject to adaptation from social media platforms.
The most dangerous effect of this system is that you are constantly interacting with beliefs, ideals, and values that you already agree with.
Soon, you will begin to feel like what you are interacting with in social media represents the whole world, and the reality of communities will turn into an illusion for you.
Apart from that, social media will eventually stop your mind from growing and evolving beyond your current set of beliefs and values, because you are constantly exposed to what you already like and agree with.
That is why social media platforms are so enjoyable and addicting, because they are practically a cornerstone for our comfort zone and inner desires.
The philosophy that indicates something is altogether evil or wrong is short-sighted and prejudiced. Social media can help us in many ways, but we should be careful of its deceitful talons.
Engaging with social media platforms is not inherently wrong, but always try to draw a boundary and do not cross the line, because you will inevitably hurt yourself and live with the regret of a wasted time and a brain that has obviously seen better days.
By understanding the nature of social media platforms and their effects on us, we will begin to use them with mindfulness and care!
