The Millennial Revolution
Millennials are creating some of the latest trends that are killing traditional industries. Leaving behind old ways of thinking, shifting values have led to the death of outdated norms.
1. The 9 to 5 work week
Working 9-to-5 is dead. Job flexibility is the number one priority for many millennials choose to remain with a firm. According to a recent study, "many believe checking work email even after going home is a normal part of the 21st-century employment, while older workers draw a line at being off the clock."
2. Focus groups
The young people today are unafraid to express their hopes, dreams and purchasing habits, especially to advertisers directly. This has led to more and more companies to abandon traditional marketing strategies like focus groups and switch to social media and native advertising like Facebook.
3. Dinner dates
Let's face it, eating an expensive 5-course dinner with a total stranger is not only weird but also highly inefficient. Why bother to splash out $100 on a dinner date when you can simply swipe Tinder profiles all night long?
4. Cruises
Yup, cruises are back in fashion. With the all-you-can drink package, why not just get the party started?
5. Golf
Seriously, how can anyone think that hitting a ball with a stick under a blazing sun be any fun? Millennials are playing less golf and watching it less frequently on TV. According to a report, if such apathy continues, golf could potentially disappear in 52 years.
6. Soap bars
Soap bars are increasingly becoming a rare commodity on supermarket shelves simply because millennials found soap bars gross. 60% of the research participants believe soap bars to be covered in germs after use according to a study from research firm Mintel.
Yup. Ridiculousness. And companies are adapting to fit consumer habits.
7. Marriage
Millennials are a super broke generation. With more debt to overcome, millennials are frequently living at home with their parents or with roommates. They’re also pushing off marriage until they are financially stable, which could be years for many of them. Marriage may one day be obsolete.
8. Vacations
Millennials are neglecting to take their allotted vacation time, with 43% qualifying as “work martyrs” — a category of people who feel guilty about taking time off and overworking themselves.
More vacation and more debt? No thanks.
9. Homeownership
If millennials are unable to afford vacations, they certainly can’t put a down payment on a house in most places. Many young people are opting instead to move back in with parents or have a roommate long into their 30s. Given stagnant wages and rising house prices, however, who can blame them?
10. Department stores
Why wait in line when you can have everything with a click of your mouse? As online shopping grows in popularity and millennial shopping habits shift, stores like Macy’s M and J.C. Penney JCP have had to close hundreds of stores.
