Mi Casa es Su Casa

For the past two and a half months, we have been on the road. Finally, 2 weeks ago we signed contracts for renting homes. My brother in law Gavin moved in that day, but our house still needed a bit of cleaning and painting before it was ready, so we spent a few days staying with him. His house is really nice and big. It is much nicer than staying with Gavin and Sondra in their RV because when we need some space we can go to our own bedroom. It is nicer than staying in a hotel because there is actually space for 2-year-old Grant to play.

A week ago Friday my husband Nathan and I finally moved into a house. There were plenty of logistics to work out, like moving in beds and heaters and buying a fridge. The first night we stayed here we blew a fuse twice. But it still feels so nice to have a place we can call our own for a while. I had a dream the first morning about check out time being at noon, and then I was like, “Oh yeah, we got a house.” We don’t have to pack up any more. It is smaller than Gavin’s, but I personally feel it has a whole lot more potential for feeling homey. And the area is great for walks and playing outside. I got out the big box of toys and books and DVDs I brought from the states for Grant, and he watched leap frog. Nathan got his computer set up and was talking over the internet with his brothers and cousins back in the states. It felt like home a thousand miles from home.

When we first got here, Grant didn’t seem to like it and asked to go back to his hotel room. But he got to do some fun stuff, like play with his Mickey Mouse puzzle that seemed too much of a mess when we were in a hotel, so the second time we pulled up he said, “Mickey Mouse here!” And since then he has talked about other things he is excited to do, like “Get new home wear underwear,” referring to the fact that now that we are settled I feel more up to being serious about potty training. Another thing I am excited about is we have enough space to stick Ros in his own room at night, so we can do some sleep training, and hopefully start getting more sleep at night.

Now that we are not continuously working on travel logistics, we should be able to help out our neighbors more. For example, this weekend Nathan and Gavin met a Nicaraguan man who had been deported from the US. They ended up helping him get a bus ticket to where he can work on his papers. We have felt a lot more empathy for immigrants since moving to Mexico. The struggle with language is something we have experienced a lot, and we can totally imagine how that would make any kind of legal problem so much harder to deal with. We have been talking for a while about how to help deportees, and hopefully we can do more.

We also have a room to use as a guest room. We are really looking forward to having several guests over the next few months, starting with Nathan’s parents. I am excited to see people we used to see all the time. I also think Mexico has a lot to offer, especially in light of problems in the United States. It is far from perfect, but there is a lot more real freedom in Mexico. I am looking forward to exploring that with more people as they visit Mexico. Por las últimas dos meses hemos viajado. Finalmente hace dos semanas firmamos contratos para rentar casas. Mi cuñado Gavin y su familia entraron su casa eso día, pero nuestra casa todavía necesitaba limpieza y pintura antes de estar lista, entonces pasamos algunos días con ellos. Su casa es muy linda. Es más fácil quedarnos con Gavin su familia que cuando estaban en su remolque porque cuando necesitamos espacio podemos ir a nuestra recamara. Es mejor que quedar en hotel porque hay espacio para que Grant quien tiene 2 años pueda jugar.

Por fin hace una semana mi esposo y yo mudamos a nuestra casa. Había muchas cosas que arreglar. Por ejemplo, tuvimos que mover camas y comprar calefactores y un refrigerador. La primera noche las luces apagaron dos veces. Pero siento muy bien por tener nuestro propio espacio. Tuvo un sueño la primera mañana que la regla del hotel fuera salir a las mediodía, pero desperté y pensó, “Oh yeah, we got a house,” que significa “ya tenemos una casa.” Ya no tenemos que empacarnos más. La casa es más pequeña que la casa de Gavin, pero yo pienso que nuestra casa siente más como un hogar. La área es buenísimo para caminar y jugar afuera. Yo recogió una caja grande de juguetes y libros y películas que llevó de los Estados Unidos para Grant. Ya ha mirado muchos de sus programas favoritos. Nathan arregló su computadora y ya habla por internet cada noche con sus hermanos y primos en los Estados Unidos. Parece un hogar miles de miles de nuestra hogar viejo.

Cuando acabamos de llegar aquí, parecía que a Grant no le gustaba. Él pidió que regresemos al hotel. Pero ya ha hecho más cosas divertidos aquí, como jugar con su rompecabezas con una pintura de Mickey mouse. Después de eso, la siguiente vez que llagamos a la casa, él dijo, “Mickey Mouse here!” Que significa, “Mickey Mouse aquí. Ya habla de más cosas que quiere hacer, como, “New House wear underwear,” que significa “nueva casa lleva ropa interior,” porque ya que estamos terminado de viajar, estoy más cómodo haciendo entrenamiento para ir al baño. También la casa es bueno para Ros, quien tiene 5 meses, porque tenemos suficiente espacio para que puede llorar a dormir, entonces estoy enseñándole a dormir mejor. Creo que así puedo dormir mejor pronto.

Ya que no estamos viajando, espero que podemos ayudar más a nuestros vecinos. Por ejemplo, este fin de semana Nathan y Gavin encontraron un hombre nicaragüense quien le sacó de los Estados Unidos. Hablaron con él y le ayudó comprar un billete de autobús para ir a una ciudad más grande de de puede arreglar sus papeles. Desde llegamos a mexico, hemos sentido más para los inmigrantes. Podemos ver mejor que es muy difícil cuando no se entiende la lengua de una region, y podemos imaginar que eso lo hace más difícil problemas con el gobierno. Espero que podemos ayudar más a eso tipo de gente en el futuro.

También en nuestra casa tenemos un cuarto para huéspedes. Tenemos planes para tener muchos visitantes empezando con los padres de Nathan. Estoy emocionante por ver gente que extraño, y también para que ellos puedan ver Mexico. Mexico tiene problemas, pero en esos días creo que es mejor que los Estados Unidos. Hay más libertad en Mexico. Espero que muchas personas puedan explorar esa posibilidad. Entonces, si ustedes quieren visitar, enviarme un mensaje para que podemos ver que podemos arreglar.
