Outlier Ventures revisits their paper on the open metaverse to see what they got right and what they got wrong.

The differences between an Open and Closed metaverse are going to create two different narratives on what the metaverse should be. Simply put, the community should be pulling for an open system while the likes of META (FB) and other big names are pulling for a closed metaverse. A closed network would limit the environment and keep users in one world or the other. Imagine having to pay a fee to move your avatar from one game to the next vs being freely able to jump between worlds keeping all of the progress, items, skins and personalization you have acquired.

The metaverse should be a world without barriers enabling users to transcend the boundaries set by those corporations. While in the initial days, all of the tech to access the digital world will be purchased from these large companies, the worlds themselves will be created, developed and utilized in a truly open environment.
