MY FIRST TIME BUYING A GAMING LAPTOP

in #metabox7 years ago (edited)

My business partner and I decided to buy a laptop for work and it was @myfirsttime buying a Gaming Laptop. You might be thinking we play games but I don't - maybe my business partner does but I certainly believe in using my time more efficiently and playing games is not (unless it's done occasionally in a group of friends).

So the laptop we decided to buy was a Metabox - maybe some of you haven't heard of them before but they build a custom laptops based on your specs.

Our specs were:

 Metabox Prime-S P950HP

RAM: 16GB DDR4 2400MHz (1x16GB)

M.2 SSD 1: Intel 600p 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD

Hard Drive 1: Not Installed

WiFi: Intel 8265 AC Dual Band Wireless/BT 4.2 (up to 867 Mbps)

It costed around $2k and it's money worth spent.

The laptop has it's pros and cons. There's too many pros to list but I decided to list a few cons:

Fan is loud - when I boot up the laptop the fan start spinning. I believe it shouldn't be spinning until it reaches a certain temperature so I've emailed them to see if this is a bug

Big - the laptop is thin but big (15") and just nicely fits in my backpack. It's pretty light but found that it can be a bit heavy when also carrying the power supply

No docking station - the unit doesn't have any docking stations. So when I transport the laptop between the office and home, I have to connect and disconnect 6 cables (power, 2 video cables, 3 usb) - this can be a pain if done everyday

Spare power supply - the cost of a spare power supply comes to $149. I'm looking at buying a spare one so I don't have to carry it between home and the office but it's pretty expensive and finding an after market unit on ebay is almost impossible. The specs of the power supply is 150W, 19V, 7.89A AC Barrel 5.5/2.5mm

Here's a picture of the Metabox:

Do you use a gaming laptop for work?

Sort:

I had a gaming laptop for about 7 years. Powerful and fast machines however I decided to buy a Lenovo Lavie Z after that experience simply for portability reasons.

Gaming laptops are great but your cons also are a true representation of what you are trading for a more powerful machine.

Comes down to preferences I spose! Thanks for sharing!

@jeremyc thanks for your comment. I replaced the Surface Pro 2 with the Metabox but also have a Chromebook which I use to carry around - the battery life on those Chromebooks are amazing and all I need it for is browsing. Most of the apps I use are SaaS so the Chromebook is ideal when out and about.

No problem @myfirsttime! I've been interested in trying a surface pro and a chrome book. At this point, do you think you are preferring the metabox?

@jeremyc at the moment the Metabox is very powerful and loving it. I've only had it for a few days so let's see how it goes in terms of portability. I think I'll either get annoyed having to disconnect all the cables or may even break one of the ports in a few months.

Oh yes, one of the other reasons why I got the metabox was because I wanted to render the 360 videos from the 360fly 4k.
