Every time I throw a contest on Steemit I enter it myself and simultaneously disqualify myself. I do this to show an example entry for other people and to show how simple it is to enter.

Currently I am hosting a contest for $100 Mene Gift Card prize.

Here are the rules:

Here is my entry:

Mrs. Goldmatters has contributed this family heirloom to my contest. This is her grandmothers gold engagement ring presented by Mrs. Goldmatters grandfather in 1947.

The price of gold in 1947 was $43 an oz.

Today gold is $1224.

Mrs. Goldmatters grandparents were married for 70 years, a beautiful relationship spanning 7 decades of connection, laughter, support, and more than anything... love.

At the age of 20 these two got married in San Francisco and lived in the Bay Area for their entire lives, moving into their house in the early 50’s.

When they went to get their marriage license, they were told it would cost them $1.

They looked at each other and asked if either had a buck.

Neither did.

They had to go back to their parents house and borrow a dollar. As the longevity of their marriage proved, it was the best investment they ever made.

For reference, lets look at what happened to that $1 from a monetary perspective in two ways. The following shows how it takes more and more dollars to equal that original dollar as a consequence of inflation.

Using a basic inflation calculation, we can see that $1 in 1947 is equivalent to $11.47 today:

Another way to think about the erosion of the value of the dollar :

As I have already explained, over the 70 years of Mrs. Goldmatters grandparents marriage, gold went from $43 to over $1200.

The gold in their engagement ring became far more valuable than the fiat they used to pay for it. It is for this reason that my own proposal to YOU is that we start using 24 karat gold jewelry for every engagement:

We should all be so lucky as to have as many good years as Mrs. Goldmatters grandparents. With the pure element of 24 karat gold, we can ensure that a Mene piece bought today will shine through the ages and be passed down forever.

Love and gold have gone together as eternal entities as far back in human history as we know, proven again and again over time.

It’s your turn to be a part of that story.

Part of my contest rules are to have a photo of yourself with the heirloom. I am letting Goldmatters Jr be my proxy:

Oh my gosh, you should win this contest!!!

Do you think anyone would noticed if I awarded myself the Mene Gift Card?

ONLY TWO WAYS TO FIND OUT!

When does it close buddy? I need to go to my mum and dad's to get a bit of bling. I know exactly what I'm going to show you.

Gives me plenty of time to find out a little more history about the object.

Can’t wait!

Awesome entry post and story @goldmatters and Mrs. Goldmatters! I think that once again, you have won your own contest!
In 1947 we were still on the silver standard, so it's easy to see what that $1.00 silver marriage license fee would be worth now. But yes, they sure made a brilliant investment, which led to a Mrs. Goldmatters 😉 Heartwarming

Just imagine all the future Steemian offspring that will own mene!
