Learning with Memory Techniques: The Periodic Table of Elements (71-75)
This is an easy way to learn Lutetium, Hafnium, Tantalum, Tungsten and Rhenium. Learning with memory techniques is much easier than rote repetition. Especially when the images are already layed out to you in a clear and intuitive way. We will cover five elements per post with special training images for all elements and numbers. Please check out our other episodes for more elements.
Each element comes with a special training image. These contain the element number, a common application, a phonetically similar image for the name and the element symbol. The color of each training image indicates the element category.
To memorize all elements by number we will use the Visual Major System to encode numbers into images. Please make sure you understand its principles. Here is a quick reminder how this system works:
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 1 = T or D. With that we can create the word LOOT. The seventyfirst element Lutetium sounds similar like lute. This element is used for age calculation of Meteors.
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 2 = N. With that we can create the word LION. The seventysecond element Holmium sounds a bit like heaven. The element can be used for nuclear submarines.
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 3 = M. With that we can create the word LAMA. The seventythird element Tantalum sounds like tentacle. The element is used for head metal plates and we imagine a skull.
Come up with your own story or ask your students to that.
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 4 = F or V. With that we can create the word LAVA. The seventyfourth element Tungsten sounds a bit like a tanga. The element is used for light bulbs.
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 5 = S or Z. With that we can create the word LASSO. The seventyfifth element Rhenium sounds a little bit like rainy. The element is used for filament in photoflash lamps.

The Major System for Numbers
To memorize all elements by number we will use the Visual Major System to encode numbers into images. Please make sure you understand its principles. Here is a quick reminder how this system works:
- We encode digits into consonants
- We pair the letters with phonetically similar consonants
- Vowels are free to create words
- Below on the graphic are the ten main letters
71. Lutetium
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 1 = T or D. With that we can create the word LOOT. The seventyfirst element Lutetium sounds similar like lute. This element is used for age calculation of Meteors.
The end is near: You sit on a pile of loot and play the lute melancholically as a meteor enters the atmosphere.
72. Hafnium
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 2 = N. With that we can create the word LION. The seventysecond element Holmium sounds a bit like heaven. The element can be used for nuclear submarines.
A Lion is coming down from heaven to destroy the evil nuclear submarine.
73. Tantalum
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 3 = M. With that we can create the word LAMA. The seventythird element Tantalum sounds like tentacle. The element is used for head metal plates and we imagine a skull.
A lama has tentacles instead of legs and holds a metal skull in one of them.
74. Tungsten
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 4 = F or V. With that we can create the word LAVA. The seventyfourth element Tungsten sounds a bit like a tanga. The element is used for light bulbs.
75. Rhenium
In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 5 = S or Z. With that we can create the word LASSO. The seventyfifth element Rhenium sounds a little bit like rainy. The element is used for filament in photoflash lamps.
