Lantern Ceremony on Memorial Day, HI
Memorial Day in Hawaii is a twilight ceremony where people float lanterns on the water at Ala Moana and pray for those passed. We don't really have anything like this in Australia, and my boyfriends father sadly passed away very recently, so we went down to partake.
The entire atmosphere was lovely. There was a prayer service, Hawaiian singing and drumming, and then the lighting of the candles and lantern release. When setting up the lantern you write something to your loved ones and then set it free in the ocean.
It was such a touching event to be a part of. I'm glad we were on the island to experience it. Especially after experiencing our own loss so recently before.
If I had been more prepared I would have worn shorts instead of jeans! Walked home that evening completely soaked!
See you in my next post!
