Why Steemit Should be more like Medium

in #medium7 years ago

I am not a Medium a fanatic. I don’t even trust it when it comes to free speech because it was founded by the co-founder of Twitter.

Today Steemit resembles Reddit more than any legitimate social blogging platform. Point to be noted, social blogging. This concept of social blogging was first introduced by Medium and they brought a revolution. Although Tumblr was first, it didn't really offer an organic way for your content to be noticed by the public. Medium’s algorithm isn't organic either, but it still has a public feed or homepage to read new articles. So I think that’s a huge advantage for Steemit, the popularity of content is decided by the readers.

Back to Medium. Blogging was never the same. No need of any hosting service or knowledge of HTML, just post and it will be out to attract anyone on the homepage which is the public feed. It is essentially just like Twitter but with an unlimited character limit and editing tools. You have your personal blog which somewhat resembles Steemit. But then you can create what is called “publications” which is like creating multiple blogs on Tumblr and it’s great for individuals and organisations alike. You can create as many publications or ‘pubs’ (as it’s called in the Medium community) for your brand as you want and you can also customise it to some extent, Medium still want the publications to look like a Medium blog and conserve their brand recognition so they don’t allow people to go too crazy. This is fine because it gives the feeling of being in a social media platform rather than a website hosting platform.

But you will still get a professional looking functioning blog resembling some of the best blogs on Wordpress. And it’s all social! This means that people can comment on it, which will be counted as articles and will appear on your personal blog.

This feature of a home page/public feed is what disguises Steemit and Medium from all other platform because it gives writers a public place to get recognised and grow their audience.

Do you remember I said that Medium was as professionally functioning as Wordpess ? Yes it amazingly is! You can add people (with an account on Medium) as editors who can post articles, manage the blog, have access to the customizations tools etc. or as writers who can only publish articles on your blog.

I think if Steemit could incorporate these features with it’s Blockchain technology, it could revolutionize blogging and free speech which is the most important thing to struggle for and protect in this day and age where it is being attacked from all sides.

I'm not familiar with Medium. New to Steemit and very overwhelmed by it!

Medium is great, especially for bloggers. But I do feel it is underdeveloped. Thanks for sharing @yadwinder. Wish I saw this post 3 weeks ago.

You are welcome. Medium is made for non-technical mainstream audience. That is why they don't provide any developing tools, just a wonderful editing and writing interface which is what Steemit should strive to be.

Medium is utterly beautiful, but centralised and control by the co-founder of the most fascist social media website there is, twiiter. It hasn't censored any condervatives yet, but I don't trust it. You can take a feel of medium by visiting my publication there
