Why are women less selfish than men?

Testing brain waves

Women are less selfish than men and share more with others and this is related to the brain, a study suggests.

The study was carried out by Swiss researchers at the University of Zurich, and was reported by the German news site "Berliner Kurier."

Professor Alexander Soucek and his team conducted a behavioral test with 21 men and 19 women. During the test, the participants entered the MRI and were asked to answer a question about whether they would prefer to have more money and keep it for themselves only, or a smaller amount for them and for an anonymous person to participate in the game.

Researchers actually gave the money to participants in the experiment to find out how they reacted, concluding that women share more money than men, which confirms the results of previous experiments.

After this test, researchers focused on the center of the brain to see if it was responsible for the gender difference in choice. According to the study, the "nucleus accumbens"—an area responsible for rewards in the human brain—is more active in women.

During the course of the study, researchers blocked the nucleus activity by using drugs. The result was that women acted more selfishly in behavioral tests, while men became more generous.

The researchers showed that the male brain rewards selfish decisions, while the female brain supports social behaviors and decisions.

This can be due to multiple factors, however I would not try to claim generalization on the base of one research that woman are more generous.
I would like to see more robust continuation of the research... Thank you for sharing :)

Not to sound too Freudian but I think it all boils down to sex.
The best way for a males genes to make it to new generations is to impregnate as many women as possible which is an unlimited amount.

Whereas Women on the other hand are very limited in how much offspring they can produce so must nurture this offspring to ensure that its genes are passed on. Plus they must also carry and give birth to the child as well.

Sorry but you cannot draw any form of conclusion on a study with 19 participants in 1 test group and 20 in the other.

When you look at the actual study done (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-017-0226-y), they have measured activation of the area of the brain responsible for rewards (Dopamine production). The 19 Males have shown to provide 1-1.5% more than the female on average.

Looking at the effects of the drug, show they have the same effects on both Male and Females.

It really annoys me that such small studies get published with unknown biases, and are taken out of hand by some reporter and blows it out of proportion by slamming triggering headlines, without even looking at the actual experiment structures, boundaries and results.

Thank you for your comment. I think the study is very interesting and remarkable, but certainly more experimentation is needed for more robust confirmation. I agreee that the source of this article is journalistic in nature and its conclusions may not have the rigor of a scientific reference.

I think it could be. Although the minor differences and massive biases here are creating for what I would say a null result. As they say, more testing required.
