Preventive medicine is the sum of measures (check-ups, vaccinations, visits to the dentist, eye control) that prevent the disease, preventing its appearance or detecting it so early that it can be treated right away. Thus, waiting for the teeth to hurt to go to the dentist could mean intensive pasting or the suppression of nerves or teeth.

In this phase, it is often possible to predict the likelihood that parents with a genetic defect will produce a sick child and, therefore, it is possible to help them decide whether or not they have the child. For example, a woman who carries the hemophilia factor might decide not to have a child if she were informed that any daughter, besides being 50% likely to be a carrier, and that all children would have a 50% chance of suffering from disease.
