Traditional Social Media Is Just Becoming The New Mainstream Media

in #media7 years ago (edited)

Once upon a time social media was "the new media" where everyone had a voice, where there were no longer political and corporate gate keepers. Well guess what? The new media, is morphing back into the old media, where the narrative is controlled by powerful interests who seek a uniformity of opinion.

There is this popular idea that the popularity of social media has been driven by pictures of cats and food, and people complaining about the traffic.

However, I see things an entirely different way. Social media was built on the backs of publishers, and the success that these platforms have seen is due to the symbiotic relationship that exists between content creators and their supporters.

I don't know about you, but I could care less about what my friends had for lunch or how much sitting in traffic sucks. (seeing their pets from time to time is cool though) :-P

The only reason I have social media accounts is to build friendships with the people who support my work, follow my favorite bands, djs and artists and keep up with the alternative political and social commentators whose opinions I respect.

Over the years, the content creators that first made these places attractive, have been slowly getting screwed over and are being cut off from their audience, and I personally believe this is a big part of the reason why no one finds the major social media platforms very interesting or exciting anymore.

Zuck could save his platform by just giving people 100% of their organic news feed, but hes not going to do that. Twitter and Youtube will consider to attempt to control the narrative as well.

THIS WAS A STEEMIT EXCLUSIVE!!

I was around when the Internet was a baby. I discovered it in '95.
I saw it would do 2 things:

  • connect people to people
  • connect people to information

Those early days are much like these early days here on Steemit.

  • People could easily voice their opinions, or share their common sense.
  • Chat programs, email, web sites all revolutionized communication.
    • AOL, CompuServe and others added a layer on top of the Internet allowing people to easily communicate, form groups and such.
    • Then MySpace became a popular way for everyone to have a homepage to share their "life" with others.
    • Then along came Facebook (which I believe was started by or at least later taken over by the deep state... ) which combined old technologies in a new "better" way.
      • It followed in the footsteps of the United States. In the early days there was total freedom. Then "they" started regulating and freedom kind of went away.
  • It's time for a new social platform and I am betting on Steemit!

Good points, I entirely agree facebook was the begining of the deep state digging into social media. With myspace the growth was natural and organic, with facebook it popped out of nowhere one day, and the mainstream media was constantly talking about it, telling everyone to sign up...it was like a rolled out program

Another co-relation here is that no one seems to talk about steemit...Hmmm

yeah I agree, I have been telling people to sign up for steemit for months, but most of them cant event figure out how to get past the registration process

I have a pretty large following on FB, and post about steemit every day, but ive only managed to get about 5 people over here lol

Steemit has a bit of a ways to go with getting more user friendly

I think having some kind of welcome tutorial for new members would be great, or possibly some videos.

The sign up process needs help also

I made a similar post to this on FB and mentioned steemit, but most of the comments I got were people who were confused about it or unable to sign up

IMO that is a big hurdle that the devs need to figure out with this

I’m working on creating a “virtual school house”, to help people catalyze their effort to use Steemit as a monotized self directed learning platform.

Then I’ll be integrating a community/ community center into the equation, eventually flipping the script and creating a legitimate opportunity for people to get paid for learning, all the while having a local, like minded community to interact with face to face.

There’s still a lot that needs to be done before I launch this program, I just want to plant the seed that Steemit can be used more than monotized, censorship free, social media. It can be used as a tool/ technology to create an education backed economy (to compliment our shift from the Industrial Age to the age of information).

@corbettreport is not on Facebook or Twitter... But you probably already know that.

yeah I still have to be there because the vast majority of my audience is stil there and cant figure out steemit yet, but i spent way more time here, i jsut drop my links there to keep my sites alive lol

You should absolutely be there, if you believe it's a valuable resource. I think everyone should use whatever tools necessary to promote themselves and their work. It's always a choice each individual has to make on their own. I was just being cheeky.

I honestly think it crossed that line a while back. That's why platforms like steemit are the future

If it's for free, YOU are the merchandise!

I think the best part of social media is seeing someone else's pets, heh. I never knew how many youtubers or people I follow on twitter were pro gun laws until I actually followed them on twitter. You have to pay on Facebook if you own a page for it to show up in everyones feed, isn't that insane? I agree with you completely about Social Media becoming Mainstream Media.

Great points, and spot on. DO you believe this is do to calculated infiltration by special interest or just the nature of any platform as it matures over time? what i mean by that is as money comes in and these platforms become more relevant and also monetarily valuable, is that simply the natural progression?

Good article, thank you
