RE: Mayweather vs McGregor - Boxing v Karate: Post Fight Analysis

in #mcgregorvsmayweather7 years ago (edited)

Nice analysis, but i saw the fight differently from you. I gave mcgregor the first 2 rounds and a share of the third. From round 4 onwards they were mayweathers.

Mcgregor deserves a lot of credit for stepping out of his comfort zone, he gave a fantastic account of himself and should be really proud of his performance. He put on a entertaining and exciting fight, but in terms of boxing, if it had been two lesser named fighters fighting, it would not be consider a great boxing match, a decent match, but not great.

I don't think its fair to compare how many punches this fighter landed or that fighter landed, because all those guys you mentioned fought floyd when he was younger, either in his prime, or closer to it. He was a lot faster then, and his reflexes and reactions were like lightening.

When Floyd hung up the gloves after the berto fight i was glad to see it,because with every fight i had began to notice the rapid decline in his skills, he was already beginning to get hit with punches that just a year or two previously, would have gotten nowhere near him. Floyd was coming of a two year retirement, i believe if he fought any top level boxer now, he would most likely lose. Something i think he even admitted himself.

Not to take anything away from mcgregor, but he didn't fight one of the greats of the sport, he fought a old ageing warrior, who at one time, was one of the greats. It still a fantastic achievement to go ten rounds in your first pro boxing match against floyd money mayweather, but floyd isn't known for his power, i expected it to go between 7 and 10 rounds, i even expected mcgregor to take the first couple of rounds while floyd got a read on conors style, but mcgregor did amazing and i think he will be a better mma fighter for it.

I don't think this is the first time a karate, kickboxer or thai boxer has competed in boxing, so i don't think it will revolutionise the sport and mcgregor did nothing that we haven't seen before. For example the thing you mentioned about karate holding the leading hand out, to land the jab quicker, it is an old, old boxing trick that has been used even in the days if ray robinson. In fact floyd himself is famous for it because he also uses it to land a quick lead left hook, that disorientates his opponents, so that he can land a heavy right straight.

All in all, i respect your opinion and its a nice analysis that i really enjoyed reading. i think everybody involved was a winner, the fighters both had their personal victories, the fans had a good time and both sports gained new fans and an new found appreciation of each other.
