Knowing the math - Algebra: Number Lines and Opposites.
Hello Today our lesson will be about Algebra: Number Lines and Opposites.
Number lines work like that, you have a line with numbers on it.Each of the upright lines represents a number so is negative 5, negative 4 Negative 3, negative 2, negative 1, 0 and then after 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 this is the way a number line working.
Start basically at 0 and you get negative numbers going On the left and their increasing in the value the actual number, but they are decreasing and value okay so they are decreasing.
On the right side you'll be Increasing alright.
So let's look at some of these points we have on image And name the points this is pretty straightforward, but i just want to make sure that you are understanding.
the dot right there on the line represent negative 3
Dot number one is negative 3
Dot number two would be the next one
for moving from right to left to the dot right in the middle and that represents the value of positive 2
Dot number three would then represent a value of positive 5 So that's 2, 5 and negative 3 this is how number lines work generally speaking, okay we're going to use number lines to do different things, but first we have to understand what number lines are and the basics on what point to the number line.
So for our next practice, we're going to actually put our own dots on a number line
and to do that we've got three points 3, 3, negative 1, negative 2
I'm going to put those points on the number line first point 3 and I'm going to put a dot at the point 3. Three represents the line
The next point is negative 1 so if I add negative 1 put a dot there or I could started 0 and know that I'm decreasing by one point.
The next point is negative 2 decrease by two points from zero Negative 1 negative 2 that is my third dot in there.
That is how the number lines work and this type of questions that you may see about number lines. First one you'll be given dot asked to identify them second type he may be given a number and asked actually plotted on that number Line
Remember how I said that we started with the 0 increasing or decreasing well opposites are like the same value by the same distance from the 0 like if you were to draw a line
straight up and down the point in our opposite that are like 1 and negative 1, 2 and negative 2, 3 and negative 3 you see that using a number line you can see the opposites pretty well because they're on opposite there an equal distance from zero.
So for example the opposite of 3 is negative 3
Its easy to like in this and understand it, I just like using a number like to illustrate that as well
So the opposite of these numbers would be as followed the opposite of 2 would be negative 2 the opposite of negative 3 would be a positive 3 the opposite of 4 would be negative 4, what´s the opposite up X can remember X just represent any number Opposite of X is negative whatever that X is.
So that is the opposite of X is negative X case actually you're changing the signs that they have came the reason we do that is because opposite each other.
So that is our mini lesson on number lines in a little bit about opposites.
And have a wonderful day.
All is decomposed on sticks) fine Fellow applauses of God )))
