Knowing the math - Absolute Values
Hello and welcome.
We're going to be talking a little bit about absolute values today the lesson is mainly about absolute values so Let talk a little bit about what an absolute value is.
First of this question down here
What is |5|, |-5|?
What is the absolute value of 5 that is the two symbols on the side mean the absolute value a positive 5
Now if you have a positive number inside out at the absolute value it is he simply equal to value 5
So is on absolute value 5 equal to 5
Now in the absolute value of negative 5 when we have something like that we essentially eliminate the negative sign okay
So what absolute value means what the symbols hear mean is that whatever inside their we're going to take the positive value of it okay so we basically get rid of all the negative side so that the absolute value five equal to 5 and the absolute value negative 5 is also equal to positive 5
We're going to be placed in the correct symbol in between the two terms
Negative 8 and positive 3 which is larger, we're gonna be used in the less than sign negative 8 or positive 3 positive three is definitely greater so that's less than sumbol < right there
Now we have absolute value signs around both becomes in.
Positive 8 and positive 3 we see that we take positive value of the number that inside their so becomes positive 8 and positive 3.
Positive 8 is greater than positive 3 ok So the symbol that we go in there is a greater then > alright
In our next one we have a positive 8 and negative 3 and in this case positive 8 is definitely greater than negative 3 any positive numbers are greater than a negative number.
Next the absolute value of positive 8 we will get positive 8 and we take the absolute value of negative 3 will get positive 3 the positive 8 is greater than positive 3 ok
So basically in this case we saw some examples of what happens when we take the absolute value negative numbers and the absolute value of positive numbers case I wanted to use this to kind of show each up the different things you may see are to help you to understand: what happens with absolute values ok
In last question for today about absolute values is how many solutions are there to below equation
Ok to think about that for a minute how many solutions how many numbers could I put in for n to get the solution of 8
I'll give you the first one n is equal to 8 when n is equal to 8 the absolute value of 8 will give me 8 ok.
When I insert in the value 8 I said the absolute value of 8 is equal to 8 and we get the correct answer
Either any other numbers that we could plug in for n where we will get the answer of Positive 8
With all that we've done, I hope that we can recognize pretty quickly that when n is equal to negative 8 the absolute value of n is negative 8.
Negative 8 in for n the absolute value negative 8 is equal to 8 and the absolute value of negative 8 is positive 8 so that also correct
So there are 2 solutions to this equation, we could put in positive 8 or we could put in negative 8 and it will be a true statement and the other number you put in there it's gonna not be a true statement okay so those are the two solutions
Remember when you see something like this that you can two solutions that are correct on being the positive value one being the negative value alright
I hope that it's been helpful and have a wonderful day
