RE: Forgotten minds of Ancient world: Eratosthenes of Cyrene- Measuring the Universe

in #math7 years ago (edited)

Eratosthenes alleged measurement has been shown to not be so genius after all www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIhgFT-OipU The story makes for a great math concept but doesn't prove the earth to be a sphere rotating around the sun. check out the experiment and results in the youtube video link . Eratosthenes didnt account for refraction of light in the upper atmosphere , and he assumed the earth was a sphere.

Sort:

First of all, Eratosthenes had nothing to do with spherical rotating earth, i referred to another article, where Aristarchus tried to prove it. It was primitive and rough, but concept was correct.
Second, you can't compare tons of historical and science books, to a youtube video, that's just ridiculous.
Third, I was trying to ignore the flat-Earth community because I think they do not deserve not even a minute of my time but this is just to much, stay tuned, I will write today one article why Earth CAN'T be flat, and disprove all points of this video, just by using logic and simple science.

Have a nice day.

you obviously have a bias and didnt even watch the experiment posted . Basically you can model the same experiment on a flat surface and map it to a sphere, therefore it isnt a proof of the round earth. I can just as easily say the earth CANT be round, obviously that isnt a answer or proof .I supposed real scientifically minded folk will look into these experiments , you are not one of those people . Your comment makes no sense, if something is disproven it is disproven , doesnt matter if its a video or not, the math can be applied to 2 different situations. if you cant see the flaw in that then youre just being dishonest

Sorry. The experiment was just recently repeated through crowdsourcing. The experiment is validated. And nothing 'proves' the earth is a spinning ball, but it highly suggests it, and provides further evidence in support of it. At the same time, it provides strong evidence we are not living on a flat plane, and that the sun is not close.

The math can only be applied to both a sphere and a sun with TWO sticks (or possibly more with a bit of randomness), but once you add a larger sample size, then it readily becomes apparent that it does not work on a flat plane. IN fact, there experiment below validates that two sticks can give the same results, as one of them actually matched up with the 90 degree angle control on a flat earth.

So, yes, you are correct that the experiment can go either way.. with a sample size that is very small. With a larger sample size, it washes out the randomness. And when you see the model on the globe in the video, it becomes obvious that his original experiment was correct.

Also, the video provides all the latitudes and shows all of the sticks. So, it's basically 'open source' crowdsourcing that you can check the data for yourself and 'peer review' it, if you wish.

Scientist hate and don't believe in God so they invent a very much complicated mathematical formulas and calculations, when in fact if we use our common sense the Earth was immovable and not rotating..What is the purpose of the Light Houses if the Earth we live in was a ball..a spheroid..

  1. Don't flag content just because you disagree or don't like it

I don't flat content I don't like. I flag content for various reasons including but not limited to:

  1. They use a post as their soapbox for an irrelevant topic, such as religion.
  2. Makes unsupported claims that the person will not provide evidence for
  3. When someone's claims have been proven wrong and they will not concede, but they continue the discussion trying to change the topic
  4. Continued logical fallacies.

I won't address the God issue. It's irrelevant and unsupported that they 'hate' god so that they invent things. That is called an unsupported claim. Please refrain since it's irrelevant and just your opinion.

Again, your allegation about lighthouses doesn't even make any logical sense. I have zero idea why you would think a lighthouse would not make sense on a globe. It sounds like something you heard on a video that you are just repeating.

And the experiment above, that is the topic of the posts, was done in ancient times. It takes no complex math or fancy equipment, and provided strong evidence the earth is a sphere with a far away sun, as do many phenomenon we see every day that you could do yourself if you wish.

So, really, you made three points, one of which was an unsupported opinion irrelevant to the conversation. And two that made no sense and were not supported by any facts or logic.
