HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MLK
Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! Not only is today a federal/national holiday to honor the extraordinary civil rights leader, but it’s also the year his holiday lands on his actual birthday (January 15th)! Born in 1929, he would have been 89 today.
Our team here on the ComicTelly staff are writing today’s brief on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. because he is a superhero. While we all enjoy Marvel & D.C. movies where the character who displays the most physical strength & power is the one we aspire to be, this superhero had it all, but we all forget that his activism was nonviolent.
A nonviolent superhero graced our presence on this earth for a very short period of time (39 years). Yes, he was a teacher, but he was more like a Dad waking us up from a nightmare he saw us experiencing. He woke us up from accepting the norm, accepting inequality, accepting indignities, accepting violence towards our fellow citizens, accepting an age old evil.
He woke us up.
We hope you enjoy the freedom of today and remember him to prolong the freedoms of tomorrow. We leave you with one of his famous quotes:
“DARKNESS CANNOT DRIVE OUT DARKNESS; ONLY LIGHT CAN DO THAT. HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE; ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT.”
~DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
