Mars is very toxic. .5% of the soil is perchlorate. It's a megafund site.
What's more worrying for SpaceX is Musk's interview with Rogan. Whether you feel marijuana is something to be banned or not, SpaceX is an American Department of Defense contractor and the DOD has very strict rules of drugs, including 420, for its contractors. An investigation, I have been told, has begun and...he might have as bad happen for SpaceX (or worse) as what happened with Tesla. If he loses control of SpaceX, there won't be a private colonization of Mars by SpaceX.
Yes i too listen about it, what we want to see Musk in SpaceX and colonization of mars. And yes marijuana must also be banned as it is a major drug in India for rural people .

Also, these projects need money.., I think... not only SpaceX, other countries working for the same goal. The last couple of years, Dubai actively working on Mars project... to colonize. With the money, they can initiate s similar mission, they can buy new talent and technology at the same time.
The US government is working on it as well. The Gateway Station is meant to be used for the moon and where they assemble the Mars ship. 2028, iirc, is when they will build the mars ship and then do a year or two long test voyage in cislunar space. The reason for waiting until 2031 for the Mars mission is because NASA will get a free return trajectory to Earth for the Mars mission, increasing safety on the first one.
I cannot speak for other nations, really.
