The wedding ceremony of a 5-year-old girl joined to a 22-year-old man was disrupted by the police. The wedding celebration was said to have taken place in a village called Raman Shar in Dakhan Town, Pakistan.

The police officers were said to have arrived at the scene late as the little girl had been joined in holy matrimony to her groom, Habibullah Shar. The officers who raided arrested the father of the groom, Gul Meer, the 40-year-old registrar, Molvi Kifayatullah Bhutto and the groom himself.

The bride and her mother were not spared as they were taken into custody too. The accused and the bride were to be prosecuted under the Early Child Marriages Restraint Act of 2013.

This was reviewed as the groom and his parents became the focal point of attention. They would be dealt with using sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Child marriage is deeply frowned at in Sindh as it is a punishable offence. Children cannot be given out in marriage until they are of marriageable age. They are considered to be adults when they are eighteen years. Those who are found guilty of the offence tend to face up to three years jail term. What is your opinion about this?
