How To Series: Writing attention-grabbing subject lines
Email subject lines are typically glanced over to get the list of the email’s content. They should be succinct to explain what the email is about and interesting to make the recipient want to read the email. Including a call to action is also beneficial to get your readers’ attention. Below are tips to write effective email subject lines.
Short and effective
Users want subject lines to quickly explain what the message is about. Short and sweet is always effective, and won’t waste the reader’s time trying to figure out if they will open the email or not. For notification emails, this method works particularly well.
Examples:
- Top 10 restaurants in Austin.
- Must-see museums in Chicago.
- Secrets to baking the perfect blueberry muffins.
- Meet Ohio’s top three chefs.
Incentives
Sales and promotional emails are a dime a dozen. Offer an incentive or a sneak peak in the subject line instead, to get your readers to click open your email. Experiment with different font sizes or question marks to grab attention, as exclamation points tend to be overused.
Examples:
- 40% sale starts tomorrow, get an extra 20% today.
- Promo codes for 4th of July sale available for next 2 hours only. Will you get one?
- Tonight’s movie specials – POPcorn promo inside!
