Search Engine Optimization & Keyword Placement
Placement of Keywords is Critical in Website Marketing
There has been much written on the topic of SEO and where to insert keywords. Without exploring every aspect of this topic in detail, the following will attempt to cover the basics of utilizing keywords in organic search. Certainly, if one has the budget, using Google AdWords will deliver.
Both of course, may be used in tandem. However, a word of caution, it's easily possible for a web site to attract AdWords clicks, and then run through a monthly budget in a single week while not delivering enough sales to have paid for the PPC Google advertising. Therefore, particularly for a new website, it might be advisable to develop organic search engine rankings through effective keyword placement within a site, initially.
Finding Keywords through Google
If a designer or a business person is writing a web page, it is incumbent upon that person to find the appropriate keywords that would deliver reasonable results. Obviously, these must be keyed to the content. In other words, if the keywords are listed, but do not show up in the content, then the web site will not be indexed well. The place to do this is to go to Google to find and use their keyword tool. This is an invaluable and free tool that can be used for any web content whatsoever.
Effective Website Keyword Placement Areas and Keyword Density
Most of the major search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) utilize complex algorithmic procedures to define their page rankings. There are two major concepts in play: keyword density and keyword location. Trying to work with and anticipate what the search engine programmers have in mind when the keyword algorithms are modified becomes an almost impossible task. Therefore, the most effective strategies in making a web site work well with search engine organic rankings is to concentrate on the areas of keywords density and keyword placement.
Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or a keyword phrase appears on a web page compared to the total words that make up or comprise the page. Obviously, Google and Bing have developed software that will prevent a web designer from randomly using key words in order to spoof the search engines. Experts believe that keyword density should be from 1% to 3% in terms of the number of words of text on the page. There are all kinds of tools that are available that can measure this and allow even a relative neophyte to effectively use such a tool.
Keyword Placement
Keyword placement as mentioned above, has to do with the places where keywords should appear.
The places to be aware of are as follows:
- Meta Tag Keyword Area
- Title (of each page)
- Within the text of the page
- Alternate text of the images
- Meta Tag Page Description area
Many of the basic web design software programs allow one to insert appropriate keywords when and where desired. This will allow one armed only with basic programmer knowledge to effectively insert keywords. Once the basic research is performed by the web designer on key word usage, placement and basic density, then the web designer should also look to other venues that can help, as well.
