Mahatma Gandhi – The Father of the Nation

Mahatma Gandhi, whose full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was a great leader and freedom fighter of India. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a coastal town in present-day Gujarat, India. He is known all over the world for his non-violent methods and peaceful resistance against British rule.

Gandhi studied law in England and later worked in South Africa, where he began his fight against injustice. After returning to India, he led several movements like the Non-Cooperation Movement, Salt March, and Quit India Movement to oppose British rule. He strongly believed in ahimsa (non-violence), truth, and satyagraha (peaceful protest).

He inspired millions of people to join the freedom struggle without using violence. Because of his efforts, India gained independence in 1947. Sadly, he was assassinated on January 30, 1948.

Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings of peace, love, and non-violence are still remembered and respected worldwide. His birthday, October 2, is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti in India and also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.
