Etherpunk Approves: Numerai / Numeraire (NMR) - A new kind of hedge fund built by a network of data scientists [Update: Take up a machine-learning course and have your fees subsidised. 5 more slots available!]
Been keeping an eye on this for a while now. It's a hedge fund that leverages on community participation and abstracted financial data. The way it works: it's designed to provide any enthusiast with access so they could begin to contribute their own machine-learning predictions, competing with other agents in the network while collectively improving the performance of the hedge fund. Data-science will become something that's fun and highly accessible in the near future, so I think this fits well into the ethos of the new distributed economy. The functioning platform over in https://numer.ai/ is also a good sign of its future possibilities.
They have quite a solid branding team too. I know some would say that substance is more important than style, but I'd say - why not both? I think this particular community / token / game could turn out to be wildly successful in the long-term. If anyone's interested, let's have a chat about building a kick-ass AI for Numerai data. Plenty of potential in this baby, especially if you consider incentivised intelligence markets in crypto-communities. Santiment (SAN) is another project to watch out for that nicely complements projects like this, but I'll leave that for another post.
The NMR token is already out on exchanges. If you're interested in taking up machine learning and staking up objectively provable intelligence, there's a pretty affordable course in Udemy: Machine Learning A-Z™: Hands-On Python & R In Data Science. In fact, I'm going to subsidise some of the course fees by sending you five (5) Steem Dollars if you purchase the course and show the receipt. Only for the first seven (7) people!
Many blockchain projects are some old world business model plus decentralization. Decentralized storage, Decentralized compute, Decentralized Match.com, etc.
Numerai is one of the few whole original applications of blockchain and smart contracts and it's live already. It and Steem are arguably the most used noncurrency blockchains right now. So exhilirating!
First time I'm seeing the word noncurrency, what's your take on these blockchains?
Bitcoin has one function: as a currency. That is it, despite what anyone says or any semantic games people might play.
Ethereum has many functions, including currency, but right now it's mainly used as a currency and a test-bed.
Steemit and Numerai are blockchain projects that have specific purposes (social networking/media and quant hedge fund auctions) with which they lead. Sure, they can both serve as currencies, too, but neither has the scale to win on that dimension. But they both are showing unique blockchain applications that are non-currency and useful right now and used right now. It's awesome.
Interesting that all of these experiments somehow postulate that their cryptoeconomics tend to add value to their systems as a whole over time. So basically non-currency are what some of us call app-coins xD
Not quite. My context is to delineate usecases not to fit a currency into a procrustean box, which is a mistake. I'm not a maximalist of any stripe and think there are many iterations of the multiverse in which anything could be a currency (and also where cryptocurrency never gain any more ground or don't matter). I'm open to it, I just think some are more likely in the future than others and very few today really qualify.
Appcoin (and altcoin) are too limiting. I've dropped then from my vocab.
Kirill Eremenko! Followed him since the early days of Forex Boat, bought some of his Forex courses on Udemy too.
Here's my receipt for this Machine Learning course
Will definitely check out NMR and finish this course during my travel this weekend.
Cool! Noted - what have you tried for forex stuff before?
And thanks for the reward too @kevinwong! Received the memo. Wish you all the best in everything you do.
Are you into algo-trading too?
Used to be for a time, but just basic level stuff although it took quite some of my time experimenting. Forex leveraged trading -- really no point to it, just a trap for any kind of ea. I strongly feel things need to be gamified to make sense to go with abstracted data.
Followed the MQL coding tutorial to create some basic EAs, then I gave it some twist and spices here and there. Mostly using EMA & SMA signals as entry/exit. Basic stuff. Made some bucks on Instaforex, lost some on a few bad EAs. Lol.
Then I stopped trading forex, can't handle the stress. Looking at my screen the whole day, not enough sleep. But I must say, it's a great experience, learned a lot from the whole journey. But not worth it for 20% return with low account balance. Plus my wife hate it too. Hahahaha.
This is very interesting stuff. It seems clear that cryptocurrencies create new opportunities for financial instruments, and this one seems viable - crowd-sourcing knowledge has worked well for lots of other projects.
I'm going to give the Udemy course a try. Hopefully I can handle it. Proof:
Able to handle or not, an interest in the subject will do :)
I was just wondering about this token. Because it warmed up interest in me.
A cryptographic token for coordinating machine intelligence and preventing overfitting sounds pretty interesting!
I'm looking forward for it to succeed in future, thx Kevin for sharing.
Are you into machine-learning stuff?
Well.. Frankly saying, i'm into everything that has potential. I like to trade and every good looking project can turn into jewel after a while.
I was already keeping my eye on it for a while and now i will research every part of it.
Ah please refer anyone you know anyone into ai / machine-learning stuff. It'll be interesting to try competing in the Numerai leaderboard. It'll be great to have a stake on good contributors :)
So basically it's like a steemit combined with AI that will pay you in altcoins to solve real financial issues?
I don't see much of the steemit part yet, but as of now its simply a hedge fund for anyone to improve on.
I think it's going to be volatile for a while, but I love it's potential and future
EtheR PUNK !!! - ))
ThiS "perks" my INTE-REST .. allot - )))
LET me .. clarify ?? ... the hedge fund has created a space, where .. competing "virtual machines" created by a community, of 'machine learning' developers .. are 'battling' for .. best results ?? Where the hedge fund, is using the BesT "predictive'" machines .. to create profit, and rewarding the creators, with their 'co-in' ?? ??
AND .. you are suggesting, " .. incentivized intelligence markets in crypto-communities .." .. that the 'machine learning VR machines' .. could be used in other markets .. outside of the 'hedge fund' ?? ??
i am i reading this right ?? - ))
i believe my un(iQ)ue .. perspective ((= 100% numer'O'logical based)) .. could BE incredibly successful .. in this field !!! - ))) WithOUT doubt .. the FuturE can BE predicted .. as ALL energy is ALL-w-AYS .. (pre)SENT .. and .. CURrENT.

ps .. i watched the first two 'free-BE' .. V_iD-s on machine Learn(IN)G .. and .. i'm interested for SURE !! - ))
.. thanks for the post !! - ))
CURIOUS as EVER - )))
ha ha - )))
So far what matters is individual participants since that's the end-point of submissions but by all means, I think this can be a community effort. There are certainly to be many ways to monetise any activities that bring value. Check out Santiment.
I don't believe it can be predicted, just gamified and there'll be losers and winners. Well maybe, probably predictable in short-term knee-jerk kind of way with enough sentiment data. Are you into machine-learning?
Thanks for the reply !! - ))
.. i haven't been "into" machine learning, ... but i can see from the short introduction on the 'course link' .. that it'd be FUN.
i once read a sci-fi novel about an advanced society, who's entire economy was gamified .. it wasn't exactly described like that, more like constant massive speculation .. but, in that everyone was massively rich to some degree .. i can't remember the name ?? .. but, the advanced rich society had massive space ships (tube shaped) and they discovered a 'bird world' (that in the story resembled the 1930's (ish))
i have a couple projects i busy with for the next month or so .. i will get back to you then - ))
Thanks for the heads UP ... it was a fun contemplation last night ? - )
.. ha ha - )))

ps .. is "bit-connect" .. a machine-learning, volatility soft-ware ?? - ))
I've been meaning to look more into Numeraire, your post was just the kick in the pants and reminder that I needed. This was helpful, thanks for sharing. It's a breath of fresh air to see so many brilliant and innovative people/projects aimed at encouraging collaboration, unity and making the world a better place through technological revolution..exciting times
Consider taking up the machine learning course if you're interested! :)
@kevinwong I'm curious , does the deveolpment team have plans or a contingency to have the functionality outside of the Ethereum blockchain. In light of what happened to the Ethereum blockchain during the Bancor ICO, the EC20 ICOs have me a bit concerned.
No idea, but if it comes to the crunch, there would need to be a redesign, and I think NMR is designed simple enough for porting to other blockchains. Their whitepaper premise is simple enough at the moment.
Weird to realise how interconnected we are.
This looks like a really interesting project and machine learning is going to dominate the future.
I'm going to look into it more
Thanks Kevin
Lemme know if you do take up the course!
Wow, Numeraire (NMR) a network that helps people compete on the network and can contribute well.
This is very good in my opinion ^^
Good job @kevinwong
