Love.

A transformative power that can take a depressed, hunched over man weighed by a loveless, lonely life and return whimsical hopes to his lifeless heart.

Such was what happened to one of my long time friend, a man I knew to be devoid of vitality, whom I almost didn't recognize when he showed up at my front door.

There he stood erect, his voice poised and relaxed as he recounted his fortune. His soft gaze and enthusiastic smile paled next to the evenness of his skin as his face radiated exuberance.

"Philippon, I’m in love!” he said.

The miraculous healing powers of Love took twenty years away from the men I knew to have stopped believing Love could ever happened to him.

Though I didn't know the person who had stolen his heart, I could see her in him. He who used to be quiet had so much to say, he didn't know where to start.

“I never really felt alive before and I didn't even know it,” he said tearing up.

“I never thought I would say this, but here goes: She is the one! I can no longer see my life without her," he added.

I'm ashamed to say that for a moment I thought, it's too good to last. I hoped she felt the same for him. As if he heard my thoughts, he said, "The best part is, she told me the same thing!"

I asked myself why I should doubt his luck? After all, had I not felt the same way for the one I married 54 years ago? Being a witness to his transformation reaffirmed my beliefs that Love is not only a universal need, but it is also all we need. Without it, we become blend, disillusioned, withering away in self-pity and desolation.

I used to say that when you have health everything else is possible… Today I know that without Love, health is not possible. They are intricately combined. Whether Love is shared in intimacy or through our connections with others, it is that which gives meaning to our days. Love is the sunshine that nurtures all of Life. For True Love is unconditional, always giving and breathing momentum into Life.

From the look on my friend's face, it was not him I saw but his heart. Once again it beats as that of a young teenager whose life stands in front of him, filled with potentials unavailable to him prior to his first date.

It is never too late to grab on to Life, in whatever form it presents itself. Who knows what may appear at our door steps, if only we allow ourselves to be young again…
