Is Marriage A Healthy Example Of Love?
To answer this question we might begin by asking another. Is it truly loving to imprison a sentient being in a cage?
When someone is sick in the mind, or believed to be so, they may find their self being committed to a mental hospital. But when one is sick in the heart, they ask another to commit to them for the entirety of their life. But is it loving to ask another to endure the unknowable, and to remain affixed to you even if you do not continue to deserve it? Is it loving to ask another to deny any opportunity to seek more joy in their life should another show up later who has the capacity to introduce it to them?
Love should always be a freeing expression and not an oppressive one. If you love someone with all your heart, and if you do so purely, your ambition should be for them to experience the greatest heights of joy and comfort from their time here on Earth. By limiting their possibilities, and by demanding that they stay beholden to you no matter what future might arrive later down the line, is not the exercising of love in a pure form, but an example of possessiveness and greed in the guise of devotion.
If we want to express our love in a healthy way, for both the subject of our love and for ourselves, then we must grant our partner the choice to continue to choose us, and the freedom to choose otherwise if we are ever to become less than the best for them. Love without commitment is a love that does not restrict, and to find the courage and the compassion to offer such a love to another may prove to be the reason why they continue to choose you, and only you, for the rest of their life.
I'm yet to tell my wife of this opinion of mine..
