The promise to David: I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail
Psalm 89 is a reminder of the pact made by God with David, through a prophecy made by Nathan (2 Samuel 7:1-17). The conquest of the promised land, Canaan, began after the death of Moses, with Joshua, but was completed with the conquest of Jerusalem by King David, and as a consequence, the Ark of the Covenant was brought to this city. It is thus that the prophet Natan received a vision from God and he communicated it to the King. Natan told David, a man of integrity and devoted to the Lord, that God would give his descendants a stable and eternal kingdom. In the Christian faith, this promise is of fundamental importance because Jesus was a descendant of David and it was our Lord Jesus who brought this new Kingdom, to a humanity enslaved by sin. When the angel Gabriel visited Mary, he reminded her of the pact made with David: "The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end." Luke 1:32-33.
Thus the Psalm begins to recount the promise made to David:
"I have found David my servant;
with my sacred oil I have anointed him.
My hand will sustain him;
surely my arm will strengthen him.
The enemy will not get the better of him;
the wicked will not oppress him" Psalm 89:20-22.
With the covenant made with David, the promise made to Abraham was fulfilled and completed, because to Abraham was promised a numerous offspring that would inhabit the promised land, but to David was promised an eternal kingdom.
So then the Psalm tells us that the glory of God and his eternal kingdom belongs to David for his love and devotion to the Lord:
"I will set his hand over the sea,
his right hand over the rivers.
He will call out to me, ´You are my Father,
my God, the Rock my Savior.´
And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,
the most exalted of the kings of the earth.
I will maintain my love to him forever,
and my covenant with him will never fail.
I will establish his line forever,
his throne as long as the heavens endure" Psalm 89:25-29.
