"Remain in my love" said Jesus in John 15:9. Meaning, commentary, reflection, exegesis of the bible verse
Jesus at the last supper gives to his disciples the last teachings about the commandment of love:
"As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you", John 15:9-12
Jesus exemplifies the kingdom of God in the mutual love, the fraternal love. Remember that this love of which Jesus speaks is a promise, a beatitude.
The commandment of love is spiritual love, is not a form of "natural love" like eros (love of lovers) or philia (the love of friendship), that is why together with the commandment of love, Jesus promises the assistance of the spirit of wisdom: the holy spirit in John 14:15-18:
"If you love me you will keep my commandments. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, that he may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see him or know him, but you know him because he abides with you and will be in you."
Jesus explain to us the opposition between the flesh and the spirit, and not to follow the vanity of the world, men must seek the bliss over all things, the life of a man is not assured by his wealth. The kingdom of God is wisdom and happiness hidden in a field (parable of the hidden treasure, Matthew 13:44), "the field of the our minds", this is why many cannot enter the kingdom of God.
The disciples fulfill the commandment after Pentecost (Acts 2), it is there that they receive the love of charity:
"When the day of Pentecost came, they where all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
Jesus is John 15:9, says goodbye to his disciples, promising them the excellence of love.
