LIFE AT BJH LOGISTICS
INSPIRED BY THE POPULAR QUOTE FROM MY MENTOR ROBERT KIYOSAKI (RICH DAD, POOR DAD) "WORK TO LEARN, DON'T WORK FOR MONEY".
I decided to busy myself during this three months vacation period to undergo an internship program to enrich my knowledge in the field of logistics.
This journey has been somewhat purposeful as i got to learn certain terminologies and contemporary shipping terms as well as models of conveyance of cargo to and fro the maritime hub of Ghana.
Firstly, the logistics industry is very characterized by stiff competition and as such in a bid to enhance customer loyalty, there is the conscious need to offer competitive rates and also assure prompt delivery to suppress misfortunes.
With almost every activity being automated, the industry has done reasonably well in enhancing effective port services to its stakeholders. Cargo can easily be tracked online thereby, ensuring transparency between companies and respective customers.
Also, the routine of at bjh logistics is captured under their zeal to provide excellent logistics services in Ghana and beyond. This is evident in their motto:"delivering on our promises". Being a major player in this industry for more than a decade, the company is poised to engage competent and well dedicated staff toward the realization of a common goal.
thereby, eliminating any hiccups in the supply chain of its customers.
Week in, week out I am tasked with numerous assignments both at the sea/ air port and within the office premises.
Incoming or pending shipment are to be tracked online updated on the board in order to always be on guard as to the arrival of a vessel.
INCOMING IMPORTS
When a vessel berths, the necessary payment with regards to freight and local charges are being paid to the shipping lines( eg MAERSK LINE).
Handling fees are to be paid to the respective container freight station (C.F.S).
After that, the Ghana revenue authorities, customs division are being satisfied with the duty applicable.
Arrangement of trucks to convey cargo from the port to point of destination.
A Bill of laiden issued by the shipping line, scanned and mailed to the consignee.
A bill of laiden is a document which entails necessary details of a shipment such as the shipper/supplier, consignee/receiver, carrier/shipping line, port of loading/destination and a general description of the cargo.
