This is my first post regarding locomotives that currently operating in SriLanka. Hope you all get an idea and once you travel in a particular train you will remember my words. Cheers!

Class S11

Made in India and brought to SriLanka in 2011. Diesel Electric type engine. Prime mover is Cummins (India) KTA50L V16 type EFI engine type. Maximum speed is 120kmh. Maximum power is 1350 horsepower. Axel Arrangement: Bo-Bo. Weight 100 tons. 1500 people can travel in one set. 20 sets have been brought from numbers 894-913.

The specialty of this is that it has toilet facilities and the seats are different from a normal powerset train, i.e. the seats are like those of most engine train carriages. It is also special that it is divided into 2nd and 3rd classes. It has an air suspension system, so the shaking is relatively less. Another specialty of this is this. It is relatively light in weight, thus achieving high speed with less power and reducing fuel consumption. Here a power car consists of three class 3 coaches, a second class coach and a dummy with a second class coach. It is made of stainless steel and fiber.

The special feature of the coupler here is that it reduces the horizontal and vertical vibration between the carriages. It cannot be connected to another type of carriage and does not come off in an emergency like the auto coupler. Therefore, there is a risk of derailment of the entire train at once. However, there are auto couplers in front of the train. And it has the ability to install 2 sets or to be pulled by another train in an emergency. Here, because a parallel power supply is given to the traction motors and more cabin is closed, the ability to get more speed in less time is relatively less.

However, it is said that there are defects in the finish. Also, some parts were damaged when they were brought to Sri Lanka. Some say that these are repaired trains.

These are maintained by HLS maintenance station. They travel on the main road up to Rambukkana, Coastal Line, North Line, and Puttalam Line.

In the year 2011, this train collided with the rear compartment of the Kandy train, killing the driver, assistant driver and a foreigner. The train is now running after repair.

See you with a CV of another locomotive!!
