Computer engineering,is it really worth it?
As some of you may know,I am a computer engineering student. This degree requires 4 years to achieve because it is engineering, and that is the duration of these studies. My current year is 3 so I am almost done.During these 2 years that I have been studying various classes I've learned lots of interesting stuff.Sadly not even half of this information is really useful.Let me tell you, from my point of view,if computer engineering is really worth it.
Firstly,I would like to discuss the main three subjects that I learned until now.
1)MATH.
I know that most of you hate this, but you have to agree,Math is the backbone of all science.Without math there is no science whether you like it or not.Almost all the classes in the first semester where about or included math.Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mathematical analysis...you name it,I did it.The scientific calculator is your best friend since the day you start the college.
2)Physics
If math was the abstract part of being an engineer,or at least an engineering student, physics is the palpable thing.By studying physics you actually study the real thing .Gravity? No problem you drop an apple or something heavy and calculate its velocity. But,you don't do all the physics during computer engineering, you do the electrical part.Wires, tons of wires and laws and formulas.Ohm,Kirchhoff,Maxwell and so on,you will need to learn the greek alphabet too.At least its fun,for some of us of course.
3)Programming
Last but not least, what makes computer engineering a special and different thing from all other engineering branches is programming.During these 4 years you will have to learn at least 5 programming languages just to pass your exam.C,C++,C#,PHP,HTML...and the list goes on.But wait, there is more. You will actually learn how to program robots, yes, robots. At my college we learn ARDUINO which is a basic, but very useful.
Enough with the subjects. You may wonder, what can you do after you finish the college.
Well,my friend, you can do almost everything.Programmer, electric engineer, you can work in all fields that include a computer.
In conclusion,my answer is yes, computer engineering is really worth it because you learn things that apply to so many domains, you have to be really lazy not to find work after finishing.
