3 things I don't understand about religious people

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Just the other day I was watching Richard Dawkins interview Wendy Wright and it got me thinking about what makes religion tick in people's minds.

Now for those who don't know Richard Dawkins, he was a professor of biology at Oxford from 1995 to 2008, and is the author of numerous books among them the best-seller "The God Delusion", where he contends the unlikelihood of the existence of a supernatural creator and that religious faith is a delusion.

Wendy Wright was the president and CEO of CWA (Concerned Women for America), a right-wing Christian conservative political action group, which among other premises supports Creationism/intelligent design to be taught at schools in the US.

Apart from the fact that interview didn't obviously lead to any fruitful arguments it did make me think about how someone in the 21st century could still refute the evidence in favor of the theory of evolution and natural selection and find creation as portrayed in the book of genesis more reasonable than factual knowledge.

Obviously this is not the case for all Christians, and I do believe the majority of them does in fact agree with the evidence presented by the theory of evolution, but they do believe God was the one to start all the evolutionary process.

At this point I can not understand which critical thought leads them to this conclusion. So I ask you 3 questions that might explain why people still believe in a supernatural entity.

1. Is it the lack of knowledge to answer a given question such as the origin of the universe, the reason why believers attribute it's mysteriousness to God?

2. Is it the apparent lack of objectivity in life the reason why people turn to a governing creator with a plan that assures them they have a purpose?

3. Is it the fear of death?

If you feel offended in any way by this, simply don't. There is no reason to be.

Hope to read what you have to say!
