If you drive by the small village of Peniche, you may ear
about some humble boat that sails you to the Berlengas Archipelago,
not so far away from the coast.
Me and some friends decided to give it a try for a 5 night survival
adventure on the Big Berlenga Island, the main one of the archipelago.
Besides the stuff we took, there was no place to get food, no mobile
network, no energy, no filtered water... Apart from some gentle local
fishermen, we understood we were on our own.
We knew where we were, sort of. In the end of the first day we
noticed the 14 gallons of water left for our 9 people family would only
make it for one more day or two, best case scenario. On the second
day, we woke up at 8 a.m. with some promising sun over the hill.
Two hours later we were dying with a killing 34 degrees celsius.
At 7 p.m. there was no water left and we had to filter ocean water to survive.
It actually felt good, when we realised we could stay away from
society and still make it. Since we solved the water problem, there
was no real problem at all. Our food was sort of well calculated, so
we enjoyed what we had to enjoy. The island protected by the
Government and you´re doomed if you treat anything with disrespect.
But still, you have amazing things to look for, from the unique
wildlife around you to the World Heritage Fortress built
right in the middle of the Ocean. Until the final day, we made our way
to reach the Continent happy and fullfilled. But we were not going home.
The journey was just begining...
