South African living flag will be seen from space!
The Camdeboo Municipality in Graaff-Reinet South Africa will soon be home to the largest South African flag ever constructed on our planet, dubbed the "Living Flag" that will be visible from space!
Remarkably the flag will be made almost entirely from plants that grow local to the Karoo. The Giant South African flag initiative was launched at the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo National Park. The size of the flag will be 66ha, approximately 66 soccer fields consisting of more than 2.5 million desert plants. This will include cacti and spekboom.
The project is currently under construction and when finished the giant flag will be visible from space.
The black triangle that forms part of our national flag design will be made from a 4MW solar field, Guy Lieberman, the brains behind the project, told News24. The electricity created from the living flag project will feed directly into the Camdeboo Municipality grid.
Lieberman speculates that the project will generate a socio-economic shift in the community hopefully creating opportunities and change the lives and fortunes of those living in the local Camdeboo area.
According to Camdeboo Mayor Hanna Makobah, 40% of those living n the municipality are currently unemployed and the project holds a great opportunity for many.
South Africa’s Deputy Minister, Department of Tourism, Tokozile Xasa, called the Giant Flag project a "game-changing initiative" within the tourism industry of South Africa. Xasa is very excited for the needed enterprise development components as well as its value as an engine for creating direct and indirect employment within the local community.
The building phase of this project will cost more than R170m but when completed will provide more than 700 permanent jobs. In total the project will cost an estimated R180m to fund and complete.
