This debate comes up once in a while, if it was another chemical discovered besides LSD would it have launched the psychedelic revolution? Probably not. Most of the other chemicals have downsides. Maybe MDMA because it's so lovely dovy. No synthetic tryptamine would have been that crazy popular, at least from the ones I have tried.

Its kind of like that henn-egg problem, what was there first, the vibe of LSD, or the psychedelic culture of the 60s? Because when you dive into LSD now, you feel they belong together. MDMA, while a useful tool, is imo too shallow of a substance to have such a deep impact on culture as LSD did.
