Now that we have fairly definitive values (or at least ranges) for most of the terms in Drake's equation, we can simply run the calc. The biggest problem, though, will always be the Fermi paradox, the time window during which humans will have any probability of deciphering ET signals (how universal is what we consider language itself, in fact, and does communication imply intent?) before disparate intelligence levels and disparate motivations preclude useful interaction.
